42,646 | 01/05/2024 11:46 AM | Former Dyson engineer secures £1M for heat pump technology | former-dyson-engineer-secures-pound1m-for-heat-pump-technology | 01/05/2024 | Bristol-based climate tech Nusku has raised £1M, including £700,000 from the UK government. Founded in 2022, the heat pump producer has topped up its £245,000 in Seed funding with a £727,000 grant from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero. Nusk’s technology has not yet been patented and is based on air source heat pump technology that is cheaper and quicker to install, taking a few days rather than a week. Heat pumps are the same technology as fridges and work by moving heat from outside air to indoor radiators. As they are powered by electricity, they are considered the most efficient way for the UK to shift to low-carbon heating and away from the gas-fired boilers that heat the majority of the UK’s 28 million homes. The Government grant, awarded via their Heat Pump Ready Programme and part of the £1B Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, will enable the product to be tested at the University of Salford’s Energy House – a unique research and testing laboratory which comprises an early 20th century two-bedroom terraced house within an environmental chamber allowing an accurate and rapid assessment of energy efficient retro fit technologies. Nusku is based in the former European Green Capital of Bristol and is supported by the University of the West of England - both of which, says founder Russell Murchie, have been instrumental. Murchie formerly worked as a fluid dynamics engineer at for 17 years. He said: ““The idea for Nusku stemmed from a chat about why heat pumps are so popular in other countries, but not in the UK. There’s no real alternative to gas boilers at the moment in the UK, even though they will gradually be phased out and more environmentally friendly solutions are needed. “Heat pumps have been promised as the alternative for more than 20 years, so why does a homeowner who could afford one not want one? “We got talking about what needs to happen to change this, to give a better offering to UK homes and the idea for reinventing them began to form.” “It’s been a whirlwind few years building a company from scratch and I’m still pinching myself at what’s been achieved. While we had confidence in our idea, if you’d told me two years ago that we’d raise almost £1 million to develop it, I’d have struggled to believe you! “It’s testament to the hard work of the team, who have designed a truly innovative heating system which we feel confident will have mass appeal once it’s on the market. The fact the Government and leading figures from within the industry are backing us is a real vote of confidence.” |

42,645 | 01/05/2024 11:07 AM | How a Slovakian startup transforms IoT with near-invisible, bio-compatible sensors | how-a-slovakian-startup-transforms-iot-with-near-invisible-bio-compatible-sensors | 01/05/2024 | I attended the Sixth Sense Summit earlier this year, where I encountered some really interesting IoT tech that offers great promise for commercial IoT applications. Slovakian company RVmagnetics is a deep tech startup customising unique measurement solutions based on proprietary MicroWire sensors. MicroWires are biocompatible sensors, about the width of a human hair (diameter ca. 20–70 µm) and measure a range of physical properties without contact. These are the smallest passive sensors in the world and they pack a powerful punch. The tiny MicroWire sensors are compact, robust, and contactless devices. They utilise magnetic fields to transmit real-time data on various physical quantities. They can collect physical data from spaces that are not visible or audio-detectable with accuracy, and within timescales not otherwise possible. The sensors are made with a glass coating, which makes them integrable in harsh environments. I spoke to Tigran Hovhannisyan, account manager at RVmagnetics, to find out more. He explained that the company was the brainchild of Professor Rastislav Varga, an expert in magnetism in condensed matter with 25 years of research experience in basic and applied magnetism.”
The sensor can provide measurements of pressure, temperature, magnetic field, vibrations, positions, and more. “You can receive contactless information through the magnetic field, which makes it applicable across a range of use cases such as healthcare, engineering, structural health monitoring and transportation. MicroWire sensors replace the need for high power consumption. They enable non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring without altering the properties of the materials they are embedded in. Further, signals can be transmitted even through different materials, including metal, composite materials, concrete, human tissue, and wood, at distances of up to 10 centimetres. Multiple sensors can feed into a single reader for a streamlined user experience.” MicroWires are sustainable and efficient – a gram of material makes a kilometre of wire! RVmagnetics manufactures them in-house in Slovakia.
“We can make about 100,000 sensors within 10 minutes.” details Hovhannisyan. Why industry-specific incubators make sense Sixth Sense is a program offered by the Manufacturing Intelligence division of Hexagon to help innovative companies with brilliant ideas who are looking to bring their products to broader markets and scale their business with the help of Hexagon. Hexagon identifies challenges and asks companies to submit applications to describe their products and services and how they address those challenges. The most innovative proposals are invited to pitch to Hexagon's panel of experts. Around ten are chosen for an intensive innovate-on-the-job scaling program, which will deliver a concrete project supported by coaching, workshops, and connections to Hexagon customers. Tigran Hovhannisyan, spoke highly of the Sixth Sense program, explaining it “allowed us to find and talk to the right people.”
The company is engaged in R&D and developing partnerships to bring MicroWire sensors to mass production and target high-potential applications. It plans to roll out its tech to commercial customers later this year. Lead image: RVmagnetics. Photo: uncredited. |

42,641 | 01/05/2024 10:52 AM | EIC awards Riverlane £2.1M for quantum error detection | eic-awards-riverlane-pound21m-for-quantum-error-detection | 01/05/2024 | Cambridge-based Riverlane, a quantum startup developing error detection technology, has been awarded a £2.1M European Innovation Council (EIC) Transition grant backed by the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT). Quantum computers generate an immense volume of data, necessitating real-time processing to correct the inherent errors these machines encounter. Previous decoding approaches cannot keep up with this volume of data, creating a backlog problem that slows down and eventually stops the computation. This flood of data must be processed in real-time by sophisticated decoders, whose task is to identify the underlying errors and issue corrective measures. Building on Riverlane’s patented decoding technology, the prototype will extend the core functionalities to support streaming and adaptative decoding during a logical quantum operation. The prototype will be implemented on an FPGA and integrated into a quantum control system provided by the Dutch quantum computing scale-up ‘Qblox’. The integration ensures that the decoder prototype is compatible with existing solutions that may be present in different layers of a quantum computing system. This grant will allow the development of a quantum error decoder capable of supporting the real-time decoding of quantum operations – a crucial step to achieving quantum advantage. This award elevates Riverlane’s total funding to £55m, having previously raised investments from leading venture capital firms and government-backed grants. To address this challenge, Riverlane has built ‘Deltaflow.Decode’, a core layer to our comprehensive ‘Quantum Error Correction Stack’. Deltaflow.Decode originated from the QuantERA ‘Quantum Code Design and Architecture’ project in 2018 - the first pan-European interdisciplinary project on codes and protocols for quantum error correction coordinated by Riverlane’s VP of Quantum Science, Dr. Earl Campbell. While Deltaflow.Decode already has the correct foundations for real-time decoding, through this EIC-funded project, Riverlane’s intends to complete the build of more sophisticated functionality capable of continuously decoding the errors that today’s quantum computers produce. “The field of quantum error correction has gone from theory to practice with several landmark experiments in recent years demonstrating effective quantum error correction offline in software," said Steve Brierley, CEO & Founder of Riverlane. "But for quantum computers to scale to the millions and ultimately trillions of reliable operations to solve problems beyond the capability of supercomputers, we need decoders that can detect and correct errors in real-time, meaning millions of times per second. As leading experts in quantum error correction, we are at the forefront of this and the support from Horizon Europe will help accelerate our plans to sooner get this technology into the hands of the quantum hardware companies that need it." |

This money will be used to finance the necessary clinical trials to achieve regulatory clearance and to start commercialization. Donor organ shortage remains a critical unmet medical need, partially because perfusion at body temperature has been reliant on blood from the donor, in which they are kept. As a result, organs are mostly preserved at lower temperatures which increases risk to them when being transported. Vivalyx introduces a patented solution to tackle this, in the form of its solution that aims to make perfusion at body temperature scalable. Their liquid Vivalyx Omnisol outperforms the efficacy of the blood-based benchmark in preclinical trials, is fully synthetic – eliminating blood-related concerns – and significantly cuts costs. Vivalyx Omnisol does not only work for perfusion at body-temperature, but is meant for all methods, cold and warm perfusion and static cold storage, with expected beneficial clinical outcomes. Dr. Andreas Schumacher and Dr. Benedict Doorschodt founded Vivalyx 2022 together with co-founders Prof. Dr. René Tolba, Dr. Christian Bleilevens, Prof. Dr. Malte Brettel and Marius Rosenberg. The product idea is based on decades of research by Doorschodt, Tolba and Bleilevens. "The financing round brings us a decisive step closer to bringing our products to market. We see great potential in our innovations to revolutionize the organ transplantation industry worldwide. We are pleased to have found investors who share our vision and back our mission," said Dr. Andreas Schumacher, CEO of Vivalyx. Localazy helps other businesses with international expansion by providing language and cultural expertise so to allow the brand to tailor its content to a local audience. A study conducted in ten countries by CSA Research found that 75% of consumers prefer shopping on websites available in their native language, and 60% of them never or almost never make purchases on websites available only in English. The ability to use products and services in one's native language not only influences the purchase itself but also allows customers to identify with the brand and build loyalty toward it. Localazy’s technology, driven by machine learning, translators, and local market experts, provides a perfectly adapted and quality translation, ideally suited to the selected markets. They have introduced a number of partnership offers for foundations, social organizations, VC funds, accelerators, and other organizations supporting the development of startups. “The main goal of Localazy from the beginning has been to mitigate inequalities in access to information and assist in scaling businesses. We knew that adapting a product to a specific, often small market requires a huge amount of work and financial resources. However, localization is not just about translating words but also about transforming content in a way that takes into account the cultural context of a given region, which significantly affects their perception,” explains Hodek, CEO of Localazy. “That's precisely why, in creating Localazy, we decided to take a comprehensive approach to localization. Our platform combines artificial intelligence technology, experienced translators, and experts from local markets, thereby supporting companies and organizations in their effective foreign expansion while simultaneously ensuring the highest translation quality,” he adds. |
